Nine Muses:
Modern Plays from Classic Myths
With his early introduction to classical mythology, it was surely inevitable that, sooner or later, Wim would write plays based on those stories. And this he did in 2001. Nine Muses includes nine one-act plays based on Greek and Roman myths, each introduced and narrated by one of the classical muses. The book also includes essays on the nature of myth, the classical creation story, and brief prose summaries of more than 40 Greek and Roman myths.

Nine Muses is often used in the classroom as an introductory course in classical mythology. But its real home is in the theatre. The plays are suitable for performance by middle and high school students, and also for community theatre. Wim felt especially honored when one of the plays, “Phaeton and the Sun Chariot,” was performed by the American Academy/Middle School in Athens, Greece.
